The tire bead is the reinforced edge that fits against the wheel. Damage to it can interfere with the seal and the tire’s secure fit. A leak at that location does not automatically mean the bead itself is damaged; the wheel’s bead seat, valve or another part of the assembly may need attention.
Do not keep driving on a flat tire or try to restore a damaged bead by sanding, cutting, gluing or forcing it back into place. Have a trained tire professional identify the leak and assess the tire and wheel.

Bead damage and a bead-seat leak are different
A technician needs to distinguish physical bead injury from a leak caused by the mating wheel surface or another source. Michelin’s pre-installation inspection guidance calls for checking the wheel for bends, cracks and corrosion and the bead for cuts, tears or deformities.
Incorrect mounting or demounting can damage a bead. An impact and driving with insufficient pressure are also relevant history to report. Those facts do not allow a diagnosis from a photograph of the tire’s outside edge.
Complete assessment may require removing the tire from the wheel. Mounting, demounting and bead seating should be handled with appropriate equipment by trained personnel, not improvised with extra inflation pressure or hand tools at home.
Can a damaged tire bead be repaired?

For passenger-car use, do not assume that a nick or tear in the bead is repairable because it looks small. Michelin lists bead or structural damage among reasons a tire needs replacement. The tire manufacturer’s policy and a professional inspection determine the decision.
Cleaning a serviceable wheel’s sealing surface or correcting a fitting problem is different from rebuilding a damaged tire bead. Bead sealer does not restore broken reinforcement, and holding air after a treatment does not prove structural soundness.
The USTMA puncture-repair criteria concern eligible tread injuries. They are not permission to apply a tread patch or plug to a bead injury. Commercial-truck retreading and specialized repair procedures should not be transferred to a passenger-car tire.
What an owner can do
- Use a qualified tire service and provide the correct tire and vehicle details. Ask it to check tire/wheel compatibility and condition.
- Maintain the cold tire pressure specified on the vehicle placard or in its manual; do not use extra pressure to force a leak to seal.
- Arrange an inspection for recurring air loss, an impact, a visible bulge or changed handling. An external visual check does not rule out internal damage.
- Follow the manufacturer’s storage and care instructions. Do not apply unapproved chemicals or home repair treatments to the bead.
A rolled-curb ramp changes one driveway transition when it fits the site. It does not repair bead damage or establish a measured reduction in bead failures. If you also have a recurring driveway scrape, address that fit question separately.
Get the tire and wheel assessed together
Give the tire shop the pressure-loss history, any impact or recent mounting work, and whether the tire was driven while flat or low. Ask it to identify the actual leak source, show the damage if found, and explain whether the safe result is corrective wheel service or tire replacement.
Common questions
Can I confirm bead damage without removing the tire?
Usually you cannot see the whole bead while the tire is mounted. A loss of pressure is a symptom, not confirmation of the damaged part. Let the technician determine the inspection needed.
Is a damaged bead safe if it still holds air?
Air retention alone does not establish that the tire is safe. Do not use an inflation test to override a finding of structural damage.
How long should a tire bead last?
There is no separate universal bead-life interval to use as a safety test. Follow the tire manufacturer’s age, condition and service requirements, and have suspected damage checked promptly.
