DIY Curb Ramp Solutions: Exploring Concrete, Steel, and Wood

Before building a DIY curb ramp, decide who will establish that the finished design suits the driveway and vehicle. Choosing concrete, steel or wood is only one part of that job. Dimensions, support, load capacity, drainage and placement all have to work together.

This guide compares the responsibilities of a custom build with buying a manufactured driveway curb ramp. It is a planning checklist, not a load-bearing construction plan or a vehicle-clearance test.

Start with the problem and measurements

Identify whether the vehicle contacts the street entrance, a garage lip or a crest higher up the driveway. A curb ramp can only change the transition where it sits. Record the curb profile at several points. Also note the vehicle, its scrape location and any changes to suspension or loading. Product height is not a maximum curb height, and matching two height measurements does not establish fit.

Concrete curb ramps

Concrete is a site construction project. The proposal needs to address the existing surface and substrate, the new profile, drainage, joints, finish and curing. Ask who will specify these details and when the completed work may carry traffic. A bag’s material rating is not a capacity rating for a ramp poured over an unknown base.

Steel curb ramps

For a custom metal ramp, plate size and thickness, unsupported spans, connections, support surfaces, edge treatment and movement restraint are design questions. The word “steel” does not establish a safe vehicle load. Obtain a specification for the proposed assembly and a fabrication quote that follows it; do not infer capacity from appearance or another ramp’s dimensions.

Wood curb ramps

A timber proposal needs suitable material specifications, member sizes, support and connection details, plus an inspection and outdoor-use plan. A few boards may look substantial while their connections or support remain unsuitable. Cutting and assembling a ramp yourself does not remove the need to establish what the complete structure can carry.

Compare total effort and cost

Prepare two complete lists. For DIY, include design assessment, materials, fabrication, site preparation, tools, handling, any required approvals, maintenance and removal. For buying, include the correct kit, any extensions, delivery, assembly, ongoing inspection and the return conditions.

DIY and assembly questions

How do you keep curb ramps in place?

Use the restraint and placement method specified for the exact design. Smooth Curb’s weight and rolled-curb profile help it remain positioned, but inspection and occasional adjustment may still be necessary. The joining bolts connect sections; do not assume a different anchoring method without product guidance.

Can Smooth Curb ramps be moved later?

How are Smooth Curb sections assembled?
