Slow down before a speed bump, keep your path within the marked travel lane and cross gently only when your vehicle has enough clearance. Follow the owner’s manual for your model. No driving technique can guarantee that a low car will clear every bump.

How to approach a speed bump in a low car

3. Follow your vehicle’s crossing guidance
Check the manual’s low-clearance and driving guidance before an unfamiliar trip. Advice written for a particular model is not a universal maneuver for all lowered cars. Avoid sudden steering or an improvised diagonal path; having room around the car matters as well as the clearance underneath it.
4. Keep the crossing controlled
If the path is clear and the obstacle is suitable for the car, move across slowly with smooth steering, braking and accelerator inputs. Do not accelerate to “hop” the bump. Keep watching for other road users and brake whenever necessary for safety.

Stay within the vehicle’s loading limits and secure cargo. Added load can affect ride height, so an entrance used successfully with an empty car may need reassessment when carrying passengers or luggage.
Look for changes at familiar bumps
Road repairs, resurfacing, potholes beside a bump and reduced visibility can change an approach. Watch the surface and signs each time instead of relying only on a previous crossing.
Understand the limits of a clearance measurement
Ground clearance on level pavement is only one measurement. Front and rear overhangs, the space between the axles, the bump’s shape and suspension movement affect where contact can occur.
