Flat Tire in the Driveway: Safe Next Steps

If you find a flat tire in your driveway, keep the car parked while you arrange a safe next step. Do not drive on the flat to reach a shop or move it onto a more convenient work area. The cause needs to be identified before the tire is put back into use.

A sloping driveway is not a suitable place to improvise a tire change. If you cannot meet the vehicle manual’s requirements for a firm, level work surface, equipment and lifting points, use mobile tire service or roadside assistance.

Why a parked tire may lose air

Possible sources of air loss include a puncture, valve problem, wheel damage or a leak around the tire-to-wheel seal. An impact or prolonged underinflation may also leave damage that is not visible from outside. A flat discovered at home does not establish that the driveway curb caused it.

What to do before moving the car

• Check that the parked vehicle and people around it are safe. Keep children and animals away from the work area.
• Read the vehicle’s tire-emergency instructions. Identify whether it has a usable spare, a specified mobility kit or another arrangement.
• Do not remove an embedded object, crawl under the vehicle, or try to reseat a bead. Avoid reinflating a visibly damaged tire as a test.
• Tell the service provider if the driveway slopes, the surface is soft or access for a service vehicle is limited.

Choose a suitable assistance option

Mobile service or roadside assistance: describe the tire, vehicle and driveway so the provider can decide whether an on-site change, inspection or tow is appropriate. Confirm coverage and call-out charges before dispatch where practical.

A vehicle-specified spare: only change the wheel if the work area and equipment meet the manual’s requirements and you can follow the complete procedure. Use the specified jacking points and wheel-fastener torque. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. If any part is uncertain, get assistance.

A tire mobility kit: this is a limited emergency option only when the vehicle and kit instructions explicitly permit it for the damage and tire. Follow all restrictions, required checks, speed and distance limits. It is not a permanent repair and is not a general answer for sidewall damage, bead damage or a tire driven flat. Ask whether the tire is repairable

USTMA’s passenger and light-truck guidance requires removing the tire from the wheel for inspection. Eligible puncture repairs are restricted to the specified tread area and injury size, with both the injury filled and the inner liner sealed. An outside-only plug is not an acceptable permanent repair.

What affects the quote

Ask for a quote separating the call-out or tow, inspection, eligible repair or replacement, fitting and balancing, and any valve or pressure-sensor work. Tire size, construction, damage and the vehicle’s replacement requirements affect the total. A universal repair price cannot account for those differences.

Common driveway questions

Can I change a tire on a slanted driveway?

Do not treat chocks, an assistant or a driveway curb ramp as a way to make a slope suitable for jacking. Ask for professional assistance when the location does not meet the vehicle manual’s requirements.

Can I drive slowly to the tire shop?

Do not drive on an ordinary flat tire. Michelin warns that doing so can damage the tire and wheel. Any run-flat or mobility-kit allowance is specific to the tire, vehicle, damage and instructions; do not assume it applies.

How can I reduce future tire problems?

Follow the vehicle’s pressure and tire-care instructions, check for new damage and recurring pressure loss, and keep the driveway clear of sharp debris. These habits do not repair an existing puncture or guarantee prevention.

Solve the tire problem first

Arrange tire inspection and a safe repair or replacement first. A curb ramp cannot repair a flat tire and must not be used as a substitute for a jack or vehicle support.
