In tire recycling, crumb rubber is rubber from scrap tires that has been reduced to small particles. Production involves size reduction, separation of steel and fiber, and sorting by particle size. Ambient grinding and cryogenic processing are two ways to make it.
This is an explanation of general tire-recycling processes. A finished rubber product has its own formulation, manufacturing requirements and intended use; the word “recycled” does not identify all of those details.

What is crumb rubber?
The term describes a granular material, rather than a whole tire or a finished molded item. Particle-size definitions depend on the context. For example, CalRecycle’s California waste-tire definitions describe crumb rubber as waste-tire granules no larger than one-quarter inch or six millimeters. That regulatory definition should not be read as the specification for every supplier’s product.
Suppliers may describe grades using screen sizes or “mesh.” For a purchase or manufacturing specification, ask for the actual size range and distribution, source material and limits on remaining steel and fiber. “Fine,” “uniform” and “high quality” do not replace measurable requirements.
How scrap tires reach a processor

EPA’s 2016 industry overview describes tires collected at tire dealerships and automotive service stations and sent to recyclers. Passenger-car and truck tires can be part of the material supply. The mix and accepted tire types depend on the processor; this does not identify the source of rubber in any particular Smooth Curb ramp.
A tire collected for recycling does not necessarily become crumb rubber. CalRecycle describes several tire-recycling activities and end markets, including shredding, crumb production, rubberized asphalt and manufactured products. For disposal questions, check your state or local waste agency’s accepted collection options.
Separating steel and fiber
Tires contain reinforcing steel and fabric as well as rubber compounds. EPA’s production explanation describes magnets used during processing to separate wire and other metal, and air separation to remove fabric. Sorting screens separate particle sizes and send oversized pieces back for further reduction.
Separation can occur at multiple points as the rubber is broken down. It should not be described as removing every non-rubber constituent or certifying chemical purity. The finished grade needs its own specifications and quality checks.
How crumb rubber is made
The basic sequence is to prepare and reduce the tire material, separate unwanted components, reduce it further to the required size, and classify the output. Actual equipment and the order of repeated separation and screening stages vary. The following methods explain the size-reduction step; they are not a description of Smooth Curb’s factory.
Ambient grinding
Ambient grinding uses mechanical equipment such as granulators or cracker mills to break rubber into smaller particles without the cryogenic freezing step. EPA’s industry overview describes this as room-temperature processing, followed by screening. Further passes can reduce oversized material.
The method name alone does not establish the plant’s energy use, cost or output quality. Those comparisons need information about the equipment, required particle sizes and the processing operation.
Cryogenic processing
Cryogenic processing cools rubber so it becomes brittle, then breaks it into smaller particles. Tire recycler Liberty Tire describes using liquid nitrogen and a hammer mill for this route. Freezing is therefore an alternative processing method, not a required stage in every crumb-rubber operation.
A cryogenic label does not by itself establish suitability for a particular finished product. Buyers still need the particle-size specification and other requirements for their application.
Where crumb rubber is used
CalRecycle’s rubberized-asphalt guidance describes using scrap-tire crumb in pavement materials. EPA’s ground-rubber overview also lists molded rubber products; some synthetic-turf systems use tire crumb as infill. These are different uses of a material; their formulations, specifications and exposure conditions are not interchangeable.
A molded item is more than a bag of crumb rubber. The finished product must be assessed against its intended job. A particle-size grade used in turf or paving does not establish the strength, grip or service life of a driveway ramp.
What recycled content does and does not establish
Processing scrap tires into a material for another use is a recycling activity. That fact alone does not quantify a product’s carbon footprint, prove reduced water or pesticide use, or establish a longer service life than an alternative. Those claims require evidence for the actual product and comparison.
Health and environmental claims also need the right scope. EPA’s federal research on tire crumb examined material and exposures associated with synthetic-turf fields; EPA states that the combined reports are not a risk assessment. That work does not certify a driveway ramp or establish that all uses of recycled rubber have the same risk.
When comparing claims, ask what was measured, which product or material was tested, the conditions and the limits of the conclusion. Recycled content, performance testing and environmental assessment answer different questions.
How this relates to Smooth Curb
The Smooth Curb product specification lists the ramp material as 100% recycled rubber. This material statement does not document a particular grinding process, crumb size, feedstock supplier or formulation. The general recycling methods above should not be presented as verified steps used to manufacture our ramp.
For choosing a driveway ramp, use the finished product’s dimensions, load information, installation instructions and curb-fit guidance. For a specific composition, testing or certification requirement, request the relevant product documentation before relying on a claim.
