A car can scrape at the curb, at a driveway crest, or at the garage entrance. The useful first step is to identify where the contact happens. A driveway curb ramp may help with a suitable rolled-curb transition, but it will not change a steep crest farther up the driveway or repair a damaged vehicle.

This guide helps you sort the likely clearance problem, decide what to check, and choose among seven next steps. You do not need to repeat the scrape to gather useful information.

Start with what you already noticed: entering or leaving, front or rear first, and where the wheels were when contact occurred. Then look at the driveway from a safe position with the vehicle parked. A sound alone cannot identify the part that touched.

Why one ground-clearance number does not answer the question

Clearance depends on more than the gap beneath a parked car. The front and rear overhangs must clear the transition, and the space between the wheels must clear a crest. Vehicle manufacturers distinguish approach angle, departure angle and breakover angle from minimum running clearance; Ford’s illustrated owner-manual overview shows these separate measurements.

That is why a universal rule such as “cars above six inches will clear” is not a reliable fit check. The driveway’s shape and the vehicle’s actual configuration matter. A lowered suspension, added front splitter or different load also means you should not assume a stock vehicle specification describes your setup.

Check for damage before choosing a driveway fix

Once safely parked, note any visible fresh marks, loose trim, new fluid beneath the car, warning lights or changed behavior. Do not assume that a scrape was harmless because the car still moves, or that every scrape means an expensive mechanical repair. An inspection establishes what actually contacted the surface and whether repair is needed.

1. Match the solution to the contact point

Use the table above to separate a curb problem from a crest, threshold or vehicle issue. Take an overview photo and a side view of the transition from a safe place. Note whether scraping happened on entry, exit or both. This is more useful than buying a ramp based only on its advertised height.

2. Assess the entry and exit route

Consider driveway width, visibility, traffic and pedestrian space. There is no single steering angle that guarantees clearance, and a different path is only an option if it is safe and permitted. Do not enter opposing traffic, cross a neighbor’s property or keep repeating a known scrape to find a route.

3. Check a rolled-curb ramp against the actual gutter

A ramp can change the tire path through a compatible gutter transition. Its shape, support beneath it, position and coverage all matter. A taller ramp is not automatically a better match. Before modifying a curb or placing anything in a shared or public area, establish ownership and check the applicable local requirements.

After a repair or an appropriately selected ramp is installed, follow the relevant manufacturer or contractor instructions. Check placement and the full entry and exit path. If contact persists or clearance remains uncertain, pause use and have the situation reassessed; speed or force is not a solution.

Scraping and bottoming out are not the same thing

People use the two words interchangeably, but they describe different events, and the fix is different for each. Scraping is the bumper, splitter, exhaust or undertray touching the driveway or curb. Bottoming out is the suspension running out of travel and hitting its bump stop, which you feel as a hard thud rather than a grind. A rolled curb can cause both at once: the front lip drags on the gutter while the suspension compresses over the hump.

Three angles decide which one you get. Approach angle is how steep a slope the front can climb before the bumper touches. Departure angle is the same for the rear. Breakover angle is how sharp a crest the middle of the car can pass before the underbody touches. A single ground-clearance number tells you almost nothing about any of the three, which is why two cars with the same listed clearance can behave completely differently at the same curb.

The parts that take the hit

These are the components we see damaged most often in customer photos, roughly in order of how low they sit. The cheap ones are at the top; the expensive ones are at the bottom.

  • Front splitter or lip. Usually the first thing to touch. Cracks and delaminates with repeated contact; replacement cost depends on how integrated it is with the bumper.
  • Bumper cover. On most modern cars it is one assembly with the fascia, sensors and lights, so a cracked cover often means a multi-part repair.
  • Skid plate or engine undertray. Designed to take the hit, but once it is torn or hanging it stops protecting what is behind it.
  • Exhaust pipes, hangers and heat shields. Bend or come loose; the first sign is usually a new rattle.
  • Muffler. Sits low and can puncture. Replacement typically runs a few hundred dollars plus labor.
  • Oil pan. A crack here leaks engine oil. If the oil-pressure light comes on after a scrape, stop driving.
  • Transmission pan. Same failure mode as the oil pan, with a more expensive outcome if it is missed.
  • Lower control arms and tie rods. Steering and suspension links. Damage shows up as pulling, a crooked wheel, or a wheel that looks pushed back.
  • Shock absorbers. Repeated bottoming out wears the internal valving, and the ride gets progressively worse.
  • Battery enclosure (EVs and hybrids). Any suspected contact should be assessed through the manufacturer. Never open or probe it.

What the noise afterward tells you

You cannot identify the damaged part from the sound alone, but the timing of the sound narrows down where a shop should look first.

Stop driving and get the car looked at if you see an oil-pressure or temperature warning, fluid under the car, anything dragging, smoke, or a change in how it brakes or steers. A car that still feels normal has not been cleared; it has only not failed yet.

Backing out without scraping

Reversing changes the geometry. The rear overhang leads, the departure angle matters instead of the approach angle, and you have less view of the contact point. If your car scrapes only when backing out, work through these before changing anything.

  1. Find the mark. Look at the curb, the gutter and the rear bumper for the exact contact point.
  2. Check the rear bodywork for the lowest item: exhaust tips, a diffuser, a hitch, a parking sensor housing.
  3. Note what changed. New tires, a full trunk, a roof box, a rear-biased load or a suspension setting can all drop the rear.
  4. Reverse slowly and stop the moment you hear or feel contact rather than pushing through.
  5. If the contact is at a rolled curb, measure the curb profile against the ramp fit guide before assuming a ramp will solve it.
  6. Never use loose boards, sandbags or fill as a temporary ramp. They shift under load.
  7. If the contact is at a crest or garage threshold rather than the curb, that is a driveway question for a contractor, not a ramp question.

What repeated scraping does to the driveway itself

The car is not the only thing wearing. Repeated contact at the same spot chips the top layer of concrete or asphalt, and the chips become cracks. Once water gets into the cracks, freeze and thaw cycles open them further in cold climates, and heat softens asphalt enough to rut in hot ones. Sealant wears through first at the scrape line, so it needs touching up more often. Patch compound is a temporary fix; if the curb transition is what causes the contact, the patch will scrape too.

Common questions

Does every scrape mean expensive damage?

No. Most scrapes mark a splash shield or a splitter and nothing else. An inspection is how you tell a cosmetic scrape from one that reached a pan, a line or a suspension link.

My car feels fine. Can I keep driving?

Feeling normal does not rule out a slow leak or a bent component. If the scrape was hard enough to hear, have the underside checked.

Will a loose heat shield stop rattling on its own?

Usually not. Shops generally re-secure it rather than remove it, because it protects the floor and wiring from exhaust heat.

Will a curb ramp stop every scrape?

Only the scrape that happens at the rolled-curb transition. It does nothing for a steep crest further up the driveway, a garage lip, or a car that is scraping because of a modification. That is why the first step in this guide is to find where the contact happens.

Does a ramp affect drainage at the curb?
